Though I'm not "officially" participating, as in on the site and the Book of Face, I'm still pushing myself to do this "30 characters in 30 days" thing throughout November. Here's the first!
***** Karen used to work as a handmaid to a wealthy lord’s daughter, mostly keeping the innocent girl out of trouble. It was not a bad life, and she did her job well, but it always felt unsatisfying. The girl’s father, built like a tree, was more than happy to teach Karen a few fighting tricks to keep his daughter safe. When the young lady was sent to a larger city to attend a girls’ school, Karen followed. She wasn’t allowed to take classes, but that was fine since she largely found the girls at the school made her knuckles itch. So during the day she had a lot of time to pick up news in the city, learn a few things, and yearn for a much more exciting life.
A chance encounter led to her taking down a wanted criminal after he had severely wounded a bounty hunter who had been chasing him. The hunter was very impressed with the girl’s skill, and as he regained his strength, taught her swordplay and survival skills. Soon, Karen was ready to strike out on her own.
People underestimate her not just because she’s a she, but because of her size. And while it’s true she is not particularly agile, she doesn’t need to be. Her strength is simply in economy of motion. She is extremely good at reading an opponent, anticipating and almost pre-acting to their attacks, moving just enough to make sure she isn’t where the blow would land.
Dim character concept I’ve had for a while… plus I thought “woman in sensible armor! We need more!”
